Read our true story (pseudonyms have been used to protect our client’s identity)
Our client Jane was a former Ballroom and Latin dancer. She had a passion for dancing and was often seen twirling to the rhythmic Latin beats with her loving husband John. John and Jane have been married for over 45 years and shared so many wonderful memories. They were both so active, taking long hand in hand walks and bike rides around the country parks. Their lives were so connected.
December is the month that changed John and Jane lives forever. They sadly received the news that Jane had been diagnosed with a terminal brain tumour. The devastating news had taken them by surprise, as 2 weeks prior, they were both riding their bikes around the country parks. With this news, Jane was adamant that she wanted to be cared for at home and be by the side of her husband.
A Class Care were informed of Jane’s wishes. With less than 24 hours’ notice, the team had arranged for Jane to be cared for at home by a 24-hour Live-In Carer.
The experienced carer was appointed to complete the domestic and physical duties so John can spend time by his wife’s side. During a wellbeing call the carer had informed his manager of Johns dedication to his wife. The carer had observed John cradling Jane daily and carrying her around the home whilst listening to their favourite songs.
A day did not go by where John was not by his wife's side. It was there wish to remain connected and honour the promise he made 45 years ago “until death do us part”. The story of this love did not leave a dry eye in the room. We wanted to support John to continue with his promise, but we recognised there was potential risk of injury to john if he continued carrying Jane.
With Johns story, we were compelled to support him enabling him to honour his wish to his wife. It was therefore agreed for our qualified Moving and Handling Trainer to train John on safe moving and handling practices. Informed of the training John was overcome with emotion and thanked the Area Manager for supporting his wife's last wish of connection.
Live-In Care is more than providing the practical, daily support, its about supporting our clients physical and emotional wellbeing. Our service is not prohibitive, its flexible and designed to fit into our client’s routine. The Live-In Carer ensures each person receives their individual wishes whilst providing family members with the freedom and space to create precious memories.
Due to the efforts made, John will know that he was there to hold his wife’s hands, carry her around the home and Jane will have her last wish.
